Is nerd

I just spent way too long reading this blog about language. (Mark Liberman, who started and writes for this blog, is an uber-genius, and I would love to take some of his linguistics courses.) More specifically, this post about word attraction and word aversion. Any readers care to comment about their favorite/least favorite words. And not just because of word meaning, but also because of the sounds of the words. I can’t think of any at the moment, possibly because it’s 1AM and I should be asleep, but when I do think of some, you can be sure I’ll post them here.

Well, anyway…. then I was googling Mark Liberman (PS, how weird is it that spell check doesn’t red-squiggly under googling? or squiggly for that matter… ) and I stumbled upon a linguistic analysis of Barak Obama’s inaugural address, it wasn’t particularly fascinating, to a normal human, but I found it pretty neat. I’m such a nerd when it comes to word usage and perception. JEEZ. I need a life, people!

Flattering, but strange.

Yesterday I was terribly bored at work – I was at the checkout upstairs that gets about a quarter of the business of the downstairs one. I’m standing there staring at nothing when a dude walks up and says “I have a bit of an odd question.”

He proceeds to tell me that he’s been dared to challenge a pretty girl to an arm wrestling match, and that I don’t have to say yes. But I said yes, anyway. So we arm wrestled. Apparently he was left-handed, so we went righty first. I told him he didn’t have to let me win, but I’m pretty sure he did anyway, because I managed to win both left- and right-handed. He managed to compliment me about three more times during our exchange, but then the dude didn’t even ask me my name (granted, I was wearing a name tag) and didn’t even bother telling me his. He said his friends might come in and ask me about it, to make sure he actually did it, cuz he forgot to bring a camera with him.

I was pretty flattered, at the time. But then there wasn’t any follow up. And that was pretty lame on his part.

bed choices

Hmmm. Full size bed with slats, and a mattress for $328.

Or. Ransta white sofa bed, also full-sized, for $299.

I must visit Ikea to check these things out. And soon.

2 to midnight.

Firstly. I have a place to live, yay!

Secondly. I really need to stop slacking on the school work I was assigned over spring break.

Thirdly. It’s 2 minutes to midnight, so I must post this.

Lost

After work today I went to an apartment viewing, where I met Rob, a potential new roommate. The place is at the corner of 87th and Lex, which is pretty much right outside the door of the Best Buy I work at, and even closer to the subway station. It seems like an OK place, three decently sized bedrooms, a large(ish) living area with lots of windows, kitchen, separate eating space, other nouns and adjectives that describe pretty much every living space ever. It’s $995 a month, starting April 1. No lease to sign, just have to give 60 days notice if I want to move out.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be moving in there. Rob was a pretty cool guy; when I told him I have to watch Lost every Wednesday, he told me he wanted to be roommates for life. Even if, after a few month’s time, it doesn’t work out, I can move out, no strings, no lease, no name on bills, etc. Even if I just stay for the summer, I’m really looking forward to being someplace other than this dorm room. The nice thing is that I have the entire month of April to move my stuff from here to there, and it’s only like 10 blocks, so that’s good. Yeah, that was today.

the man who owns the news

Today I started looking at craig’s list for apartments and room shares and etc etc etc. I decided that even if though I’ve paid for this place through May whatever (8th, 10th?), it might be beneficial to have a place starting April 1, or April 15, so that I don’t have to move out during exam times, and that I can have enough time to move all my stuff from here into the new place, cuz I don’t exactly have a place for storage, or a vehicle (i guess a taxi would work…) (huh, i already got a response to an email I sent. apparently I’m looking at a place tomorrow already… )

Currently I’m reading The Man Who Owns the News by Michael Wolff, about Rupert Murdoch. and I couldn’t be more uninterested. I’m seriously on page 22 (of just over 400) and I just can’t make myself read anymore. Not because the writing is bad or anything, just because I DON’T CARE. Stupid general publishing course and its making me read stuff about newspaper publishing. Good thing I have about 3 weeks to finish it. It’s supposed to be done by this coming tuesday, but this prof is so… unaware… that it doesn’t matter.

Anyway. Today is day two of my caffeine (and by extension, soda) detox. The headache is subsiding, but the sweet tooth is still nagging. I really want some candy!

insane after only 3 days

I just said, aloud, TO MYSELF, while attempting to play guitar hero, but putting in the wrong game disc “it helps to put in the right proper game.” Either I’ve gone mad, or watching 14 episodes of Firefly in two days has turned my brain into mush.

Noteworthy: Neil Gaiman is on The Colbert Report tonight. WATCH IT. or die. that is all.

Mr. F

Who needs exercise DVDs when you can just dance around yr room like a crazy person for 12 minutes to some well-mixed mash-up songs. If had my own place, I’d do that like three or four times a day, I swear.

I think I’ll do it again, now, just for good measure. (gotta get it in while the roomies are gone!)

Also, I can kill you with my brain.

spring break ftw.

Today was super lame. Except for the tasty dinner that I made myself, I did a whole lotta nothing.

Tomorrow I have to work for like 6 hours, so there’s that. I also have a take home midterm that I have to work on at some point this week.

Should be an awesome week. Spring break, ftw!
